Sparring Etiquette
Unspoken sparring rules in jiu jitsu.
If you’re just starting to spar you might not know all the rules, but most rules are common sense. They just need to be said because people have been hurt in the past.
This blog is about rolling with smaller training partner. You need to look after each other so everyone can go home safe and train tomorrow.
You don’t need to throw them around like a rag doll, I've rolled with smaller female training partners and I don't smash them. But in saying that if they get a submission hold I won't just give it to them.
It's important to get that middle grown to make everyone work for positions and work for submissions.
The roll can become more technical rather than something like an arm wrestle where you're just throwing strength at someone.
Whenever you’re sparring at your gym, just remember you’re not fighting for a medal. Calm down and think about what you want to do. You don’t want roll at 100 percent all the time because that's how you hurt each other
And finally. No slamming just because you can pick them up. If you manage to pick up your training partner off the mat you put them back down. It’s dangerous and you're not going to be making any friends slamming everyone.
What are your thoughts on rolling with much smaller training partners?
